Early year students’ development is supported when hands-on learning is combined with student-initiated play. Play provides benefits for cognitive, social, emotional and physical development for students from all socio-economic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds. It offers authentic opportunities for students to begin their exploration and development of the attributes of the learner profile. In the young students, the opportunity to create their own play and explorations helps to develop independence and creative thinking. As students guide their own play, social interactions take place and relationships are built.
In Grade PP2, students and facilitators became partners and designed free play. This helped the classroom to be an agentic classroom. The students voiced out their choices and chose the best possible options for the virtual free play. They developed the essential agreements to be followed during the playtime and followed them.
They choose to play different games like hide and seek, collage of their drawings and book challenge, etc. They brought their favourite book and started reading it, who completed first would get an opportunity to share their story with their friends.
Opportunities such as these help them to face challenging times. They have started to adapt themselves to face the changing situations.
