As an active member of the Professional Learning Community (PLC) for Librarians (Community of IB Librarians across India and Gulf countries), I conducted the first session through Google Meet for the series of Importance of Read aloud on 9th July 2020.
I presented and shared my best practices with other IB librarians from Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. During the session, the focus was on, “Why read aloud or read out loud to the students?”
There are five most important things that the child develops by listening to regular read alouds. They are as follows:
- Developing listening skills.
- They are viewing the same thing they are listening to.
- They are trying to understand what they are listening to and viewing.
- They are thinking about their understanding, trying to make connections.
- They are imagining.
Sometimes it happens that one does not have good reading skills but by listening and reading aloud they can understand, they think, and they imagine. Read aloud is a foundation for literacy development. If we start at a very young age, it helps the child to understand that the pictures and the print has some meaning. There is something which can be conveyed through this. By listening to stories regularly they also become familiar with phrasing, expressing and flow of sentences in the story. It also helps them to understand that punctuation and structure of sentences is very important.
It is very essential and important for all the schools/ parents to create an environment and to give exposure to the students of all ages where they get a chance to listen fluent and expressive read aloud.
Participants also shared their views and ideas about why it is important to have regular read alouds. It was indeed a good learning experience to conduct the session for other IB librarians from different places.
