Geckos on an inquiry of “How the world works” are keen on understanding the impact of Energy on nation’s economy, social well-being and environmental changes. And hence decided to understand what human practices can be adapted in order achieve sustainability.
They felt responsible towards the energy that is being utilized on the campus and want to perform analyze what options are practical options that their school adopted in making their campus sustainable and also what measures can be taken in order to maintain it. And in this journey they understood the importance our School Architect played in making their school eco-friendly and wanted to have an interactive session with him which was arranged for the inquisitive minds of theirs.
The event began with introduction of the guest by our beloved Principal, Ms. Hema Surapaneni. The guest Mr. Surya Kakani who serves as School Architect is the Dean of School of Architecture, CEPT (Center Environmental Planning and Technology) University, Gujarat.
Mr. Surya inquired if students have any questions. Geckos exhibited their social skills and came up with wide range of questions corresponding to their unit of inquiry (Energy). Few of the enthusiastic geckos also wanted to understand the guest’s vision for making their school ecofriendly, ways to save consumption of energy in the campus, upcoming plans for making new blocks environment friendly.
The students learnt and understood that the ideal human practices remain to be alternate and clean ways of producing energy and their efficient use. Mr. Surya appreciated the geckos and guided them towards ways of conserving energy by providing alternate sources. He explained on how the waste from school’s kitchen is going to be used as biomass. He also emphasized on the amount of water that is being consumed on sustaining the campus and how recycling of water will be done for reusing. Geckos were curious to know more about recycling water. Mr. Surya continued that every droplet of rainwater that falls on the 27 acres would be collected in Rainwater Harvesting Pits, which recharge and increase the level of ground water table. He also mentioned about their plan of setting sewage treatment plan up in the premises to generate energy from biological waste.
A session of this sort majorly helped the students building right attitudes and attributes – confident, respect. Students understood the importance of architectural elements, the roles and responsibilities a team holds while discussing about windmills and that they are built with the strongest of the materials and role a civil engineer plays in building them.
Students critical thinking skills were put to work when they realized that solar energy can be generated even during the absence of sun but in low quantity. Geckos shared various sustainable practices that they could adapt in order to save energy.
After reaching their classrooms, geckos immediately opened the blinds for fresh air, which was available abundantly instead of turning the fans and lights on. Geckos also helped one another in understanding the importance of saving electrical energy.
